Amadou Thiam was born January 1957 in Dakar and attended Lycee Blaise Diagne. In 1974 at age 17, he worked for the Global Atlantic Tropical Experiment (GATE Project) in Dakar, a joint endeavor of several countries studying the environmental effects of the Sahel Desert, serving as an interpreter and dispatcher. That year his work and language skills were featured in an article in the New York Times. He also served as the personal interpreter for David Brinkley of NBC News during the network's production of a story about Goree Island. Over the next two years, Mr. Thiam worked as a freelance interpreter and tour guide for Senegal's Department of Tourism, as well as for the U.S. Embassy, Citibank, and local tour operators.

In 1976, he was chosen by Moustapha Fall, the Minister of Tourism, to be one of a two-person team stationed in New York to market Senegal as a tourist destination. That project resulted in a 100% increase in the number of Americans and Canadians visiting Senegal during the first year. For the next seven years, Mr. Thiam continued to promote Senegal in the U.S. and Canada, delivering lectures and presentations and participating at trade shows. During these years, his extensive travel throughout the U.S. has allowed him to establish many relationships in political, social, and business circles which continue today. During his years in New York, Mr. Thiam continued his formal education, graduating from Manhattan Community College in Business Administration and Baruch College in Marketing Management. In 1984, he relocated to Los Angeles where he joined Mandarin Travel and Tours as a consultant, marketing incentive and convention travel. In 1991, he joined Professional Consultation Services as Director of Settlements, where for several years he was engaged in the negotiations of claims with all of California's largest insurance companies. In 1996, Mr. Thiam established African Capital Group in Los Angeles and Dakar to promote busine ss investments between African economic operators and American and Asian investors. This venture has also included the promotion of cultural exchange programs and music events. Mr. Thiam also has created various websites as a means to promote the country's cultural wealth and trade opportunities. These websites have received several million hits since 1997. Furthermore, in September 1998, Mr. Thiam was awarded a license by the Government of Senegal to operate a new FM radio station.
