Lady Elizabeth DioufELIZABETH DIOUF
SOLIDARITÉ-PARTAGE FOUNDATION

Address by Elizabeth Diouf, Foundation President, on the occasion of the Third Gala Ball of the Elizabeth Diouf Solidarité-Partage Foundation

By God's grace, we've gathered once more to celebrate the third annual Gala Ball of the Elizabeth Diouf Solidarité-Partage Foundation.

Beyond faithfulness to a tradition, this occasion is always one of joyful togetherness, a strong symbol of our willingness to to extol the values to which we impute our inspiration, our enlightenment, and our guidance in all our everyday actions.

As we begin a new millenium, we understand that the moral of generosity leads to an ethos of love. Doing well and keeping onself in joy, says Spinoza; love is the end, is greatheartedness, is the way.

Generosity is that virtue which we hold in the name of giving to or serving others. In alliance with courage, generosity becomes heroic; when allied to justice, it becomes equity; allied to sympathy, it becomes tolerance. But, it's shown in the most beautiful light when, in alliance with sweetness, it become goodness.

If we've have been able to accomplish so much good to help the poor and the weak, it's because we have allied the modesty of our means with our determination to persevere, our passion for activism, our devotion to the cause of those who suffer and who have need for love and hope.

Once more, I express my sincere gratitude to all those who generous donors whose continually given precious gifts will ensure the realization of some of our dreams.

Also, I wish to express my gratitude to all those tireless workers at the Foundation, my pride in them equals my satisfaction with the remarkable amount of work they've accomplished. Truly, Truly, they have all embodied the spirit of that universal commandment to "love thy neighbor as thyself."

I know that you all have the heart to accompany your generosity of spirit which is in us all and which makes us accomplish more and greater things. It is a spirit which will never weaken That is the basis of all our optimism, yours and mine, now and in the future.

A strengthening of our joint responsibilities with regard to the dispossessed, to the vulnerable or minority groups amongst us, notably children, women, the elderly, and the handicapped.

Contributing to the struggle against social plagues which weaken human character, such as drug-abuse, prostitution, juvenile delinquency, beggary, and all forms of social deviancy.

Fighting against exclusion and intolerance in all their many forms.

Encouraging female participation in the development of Sénégal and Africa.

Cooperating with organizations, institutions and foundations which possess similar goals.

Establishing an organization for the receipt of all contributions, gestures of charity, solidarity and friendship, from local and foreign benefactors and foundations wishing to cooperate in the relief of those in difficulty.

Helping in the economic, social, and cultural uplift of the underprivileged.

More generally, bringing aid, care, moral and physical comfort to the suffering, the destitue, and the poverty-stricken.

To be sure, this is an ambitious program; however, nothing is impossible with a valiant heart.
