FOUNDATION NJUMA KOOR FAY

"Illiteracy and Poverty are not invincible foes of humankind."

A grassroots organization, the Foundation Njuma Koor Fay (FNKF) was founded by the family of the late Njuma Koor Fay (1892-1969) to continue his legacies of empowerment and literacy-building for the people of the Ex Canton de Ndiaganiao-Sandock.

Njuma Koor Fay was born in Ndiaye-Ndiaye Ndiaganiao around 1892. He passed away on April 10th, 1969.

Fighting as a Tirailleur Sénégalais during World War I, Njuma Koor Fay observed the critical link between education and the modernization and economical development of Europe.

A few years after returning from the battlefields of WWI, he started a campaign to open schools in the villages of the former Canton de Ndiaganiao-Sandock. THe local administration of that time felt that this was a dangerous initiative. They were quotes as saying, "Once these people know how to read and write it will be next to impossible to rule them easily."

After a few years spent mobilizing the populations and some time spent in a prison in Podor, Njuma Koor Fay was able to get one school open. His success was possible thanks to the support of many other people in Ndiaganiao-Sandock. From that school and the ones that followed, have graduated hundred of people who today occupy high-paying jobs, and/or key positions in the Sénégalese government.

The raison d'être of the Foundation is to continue and extend the horizon of the more than thirty years effort by Njuma Koor Fay to improve the living condition of Ndiaganiao-Sandock's populations.
